ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT

REVERSING THE SIGNS OF AGEING WITH ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT

A common facial cosmetics treatment is the injection of an anti-wrinkle agent to reduce the signs of ageing. It is effective in temporarily reversing the lines, known as wrinkles, on your face. Botox (anti-wrinkle treatment) is an approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate and severe frown lines between the brows and "crow’s feet" lines around the eyes. Dentists may also recommend an anti-wrinkle treatment to reduce the symptoms of bruxism (teeth grinding), as well as to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with it.

YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD OF BOTOX, BUT WHAT IS IT?

Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has gained immense popularity in the cosmetic industry for reducing facial wrinkles and fine lines. When used in dental treatments, Botox works by blocking nerve signals in specific muscles, leading to muscle relaxation. This mechanism is particularly beneficial in addressing various dental issues that are related to muscle tension and hyperactivity. Botox is also used to treat a variety of medical conditions, such as chronic migraine headaches, overactive bladder, excessive sweating, and teeth grinding, and can reduce the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

The treatment typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes.  In most cases, a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area and keep you comfortable during the treatment. Small amounts of Botox are then injected into the muscle tissue. The injection blocks the nerves from signalling the muscles, thus restricting muscle activity. The results and benefits typically last for around three to four months, depending on the patient's case. Good candidates for Botox include those between the ages of 18 and 65, those with cosmetic concerns or dental conditions such as TMJ, those seeking non-invasive treatment for their skin, and those in good physical and psychological condition. Botox injections typically cause minimal discomfort and most patients report feeling only a slight pinch or sting during the procedure.

IS BOTOX SAFE AND IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

Botox is typically recommended for individuals who are looking to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the face, as well as to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ and bruxism. It is important to note, however, that Botox is not recommended for individuals under the age of 18. Botox is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in adults. Botox is trusted by dentists and aesthetic providers around the world, and have been evaluated in both clinical trials as well as in hundreds of peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT AT WOODBOURNE DENTAL

At Woodbourne Dental, we use approved anti-wrinkle agents to improve the facial appearance of our adult patients. It is important to have Botox treatments administered by a qualified dentist with the necessary experience and knowledge to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment. This treatment helps with:

  • High lip lines: High lip lines take place when you smile, and a large majority of your gum is exposed above your teeth. Botox relaxes the upper lip and allows less of the gum to show while smiling.

  • TMJ and teeth grinding: Addressing teeth grinding concerns with Botox eases muscle tension, prevent potential damage to teeth, and offers relief from TMJ discomfort.

  • Aging lines: Face aging lines often occur around the upper and lower lips. This typically results from natural aging sped up by excessive UV light exposure, genetics, smoking, etc. Botox injections can diminish or eliminate these aging lines around the lips.
