ROOT CANAL THERAPY

ROOT CANAL THERAPY: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FOR DENTAL PATIENTS

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a common dental procedure that is performed to save a damaged or infected tooth. This procedure is performed by a dentist or endodontic specialist, and it involves removing the damaged or infected portion of the tooth and cleaning and sealing the inside of the tooth. The goal of root canal therapy is to treat a tooth abscess in order to preserve the natural tooth and prevent the need for more invasive procedures, such as a tooth extraction. After root canal treatment, your tooth will be clean and free of infection. Don't let damaged or infected teeth compromise your oral health and your quality of life.

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Root canal therapy is the dental treatment for damaged or infected teeth. The treatment is needed when the soft tissue inside the tooth, called the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected due to injury, decay, or other factors. During root canal therapy, the dentist or endodontist removes the damaged or infected area inside the tooth, cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent re-infection and allow the tooth to heal. Overall, root canal therapy is a common and relatively straightforward procedure that can help to save a damaged or infected tooth and prevent further dental problems.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Before starting a root canal treatment, your dentist will numb the affected area and then make a small opening in the top of the tooth. They will then use special instruments to remove the damaged or infected tissue from the inside of the tooth, as well as any other debris or bacteria. The tooth is typically restored with a filling, which fills and seals the inside of the tooth with a rubber-like material, to protect and strengthen it. In some cases, it is necessary to place a crown or other restoration over the top of the tooth to restore the structure and strength of the tooth which was lost due to the damage caused by decay and infection. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia and is usually completed in one or two visits to the dentist. In some cases, a patient may experience mild discomfort during or after the procedure, especially if the tooth abscess caused severe pain before the treatment, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should subside as the tooth heals after treatment of the infection.

WHY WOULD I NEED TO UNDERGO A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE?

A root canal is typically needed when the soft tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes damaged or infected. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including deep decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth. If left untreated, a damaged or infected pulp can cause pain, swelling, and eventually, the loss of the tooth. Similar to infections in other parts of your body, tooth abscess (or infection in your tooth) can pose a risk to your overall health, and should be treated by a trained medical professional. At Woodbourne Dental, our dentists are experienced and qualified to deal with dental and oral health problems, including those that require root canal treatment. If you're experiencing pain or discomfort in your teeth or gums, it's important to schedule a dental exam as soon as possible.
